Medigap Health Insurance (Medicare Supplemental Insurance)
Medigap health insurance goes along with both Part A and Part B Medicare. Medigap Policies are offered by private insurance companies, but are standardized by the government. The help to pay all or most of the expenses that are not covered by original Medicare. These expenses are often called “gaps”.
Medigap Health Insurance Eligibility
To be eligible for Medigap health insurance, you must be enrolled in both Part A and Part B Medicare. For those people who are turning 65 and taking Part B Medicare, there is what is called an “Open Enrollment Period”. This period lasts for 6 months from the time they take Part B. During this time, people may enroll in a Medigap Health Insurance plan and be considered guaranteed issue. The cannot be denied coverage nor will they be given a higher premium based on health conditions.
Medigap Health Insurance When Coming off of Employer Coverage
There are other times that people may be guaranteed issue for their Medigap Health Insurance. Those over the age of 65 who are losing their employer group coverage are guaranteed issue into a Medicare Supplement.
Also, anyone who is moving outside of their coverage area from a Medicare Advantage plan, or a Medicare Supplement select plan are also guaranteed Medigap health insurance coverage if it’s within 63 days from the date they moved.
Which Medigap Health Insurance Plan is Best?
There are ten Medigap Plans available and they are lettered A – N. Each plan has slight different benefits and are offered by many different private insurance companies. Medicare Supplement Plans pay most or all of the gaps in Medicare, and each plan letter has identical coverage regardless of which company you choose. For instance, a Medigap Plan F from United of Omaha is the exact same coverage as a Medigap Plan F from Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Their premiums can vary widely however, so it’s important to shop the rates.
Medigap Plan F
- This plan covers 100% of the out-of-pocket costs beyond Part A and B
- There is no network and you can visit any doctor or specialist that accepts Medicare
- There are No co-pays, no deductibles, and no coinsurance
Medigap Plan G
- Just one out-of-pocket expense which is the annual Part B deductible
- Once that is met, this plan pays 100% of the gaps
- Like Medigap Plan F, there is no network
- Typically has a lower monthly premium than Plan F
