Medicare Supplements – Covering the Gaps

Medicare Supplements

If it is a normal check-up or a  serious medical case,Medigap plans can let you rest at ease that your bills will be paid.  Lets see why people often choose Medicare Supplements.

Medicare has a few “parts.”

  • Part A – This part covers hospital bills. There is no premium if you worked 40 quarters (10 years) and paid into the system.
  • Part B - This part covers doctor visits. There is a yearly premium which is taken out of Social Security monthly. Some people may choose to wait to enroll in Part B if they still have Group coverage where they work.
  • Part D – This part covers drugs prescribed by your doctor. You do not have to have Part D.  There are set times that you may change or enroll your plan in the year.

Medicare Supplements

Someone can get Medicare Supplements to help them pay for the things Medicare doesn’t pay for. Part A and B do not pay for costs like co-pays and deductibles. These are known as Medicare “gaps.” The gaps are what one will have to pay out-of-pocket after Medicare pays all that it has to pay. If you are on any of the Medigap Insurane Plans, it picks up a lot of if not all of these gaps based on your plan choice.
What are the Gaps in Medicare?

Look below to see the gaps that you must pay for when on Medicare alone without a Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plan.

Part A - There is a $1100 deductible you must pay if you stay in the hospital. If you leave the hospital for 60+ days and then return, you must pay this all over again.  It is not a yearly deductible. If you stay in the hospital longer than 60 days then you also have to pay a hospital coinsurance.

Part B - You must pay 20% of your blood-work deductibles, doctor bills, excess charges of Part B, skilled nursing coinsurance, and a yearly deductible.

It’s fair to say that these gaps can add up to a lot of money even with just plain doctor visits. It is not uncommon that Medicare Supplements are the main reason someone still has some savings post a serious health issue. Find the right plan for you.  It is easier than you may think.

Which Plan will provide the Best Medigap Insurance?

Medicare Supplements are given Letters A through N. Each Plan gives a little bit different coverage. This will make a difference in which plan you choose.

All of the Medicare Supplements give the same coverage. In other words, no matter which company you choose to get your plan from you will get the same benefits. A Plan G from Blue Cross Blue Shield pays the same amount of your bills as a Plan G from United of Omaha. The coverage of Medicare Supplements will be the same, but the monthly medicare supplement rates can range a lot between each company. Put another way, you may pay a lot more money for Medicare Supplements with one company than with another for identical benefits.
